Abstract: At the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in Marietta, Georgia, sits a majestic home with a tower.

It is a 13,714 square foot modern-style castle that stands out among the array of high-end homes in the area.

Built in 1995 and listed for $2.195 million, the castle was a passion project for owners Clark and Terri Ullom.

They knew they wanted to build something extraordinary and went in search of inspiration, which they found on a driving trip through England and Scotland.

The couple returned home inspired after staying in various castles and manor houses.

"We took a lot of pictures of the interior and exterior and blended all those ideas into the house we built," Clark says." I don't know if we knew exactly what we were looking for; but when we saw it, we knew."

The result is a castle with five bedrooms, five full baths and plenty of living space.

A breezeway connects the main part of the house to a carriage house with a bedroom and a full kitchen.

Everything stays true to the castle theme - especially the solid mahogany front door, which comes from an actual castle.

It "has very large iron handles, which prevent people from breaking it by putting their shoulders against the door," Clark says, explaining the door's stately origins.

Other castle-like details of the home include 25-foot ceilings in the great room, Honduran mahogany throughout, imported fireplace mantels and bronze chandeliers.

Stone lions sit on guard at the front door, teeth bared. For Clark, the fierce felines embody a certain symbolism.

"It means power and grandeur, and I think it expresses the realization of the American dream," he says.

The Ulloms were drawn to the idea of building a castle because they wanted a home like no other.

"I was fascinated by the fact that castles are more than boxes," Clark said." They had towers, curves and spires, and many elements of architectural beauty."

He adds, "I took it to a level I probably didn't plan for, but that's what it ended up being. Too often, I see a lack of color and a lack of detail. So when we built this house, we wanted to bring the warmth and strength of the English countryside - and that element of royalty - to a home in the Atlanta metro area."

The king and queen of this castle raised their family here, but are ready to move on to the next phase of their lives.

"I'll be sad to see it go, because there are so many memories there," Clark said." I built that house from the ground up, knowing every plank, every brick and every stone. Now it's time for someone else to enjoy it."
